The first item of business was to discuss District 5300 emails sent to Club President Sam Garcia.  Palmdale Rotary will be sending two students to RYLA Camp.  It is most likely that our students will come from our Interact Club at Pete Knight High School.

The second item of business was to reiterate the importance of continued Rotary Foundation contributions (either by payroll deduction or direct contribution).  Chuck Church was selected as the Foundation Candidate for our Club for submittal to the Foundation Gala.

The third item of business was to discuss the classes available from the Rotary Learning Center regarding club membership.  Classes are available on line for signup.

The fourth item of business was to discuss Chuck Church’s follow up with DG Raghada Khoury regarding a list of corporations and organizations that provide financial funding for non-profit clubs.  DG Khoury replied that she did not have an explicit list but that corporation names can be obtained by going on line and finding them through Google.  Chuck followed up by going on line to obtain names, but found that initial searches only came up with companies that will submit your funding requests through their system.  Further searches identified companies that do provide funding but most grants are tied to schools and or children in need of funding.  Additional research is needed to locate 5 to 10 companies to submit requests for funding.

The fifth item of business was to continue the discussion from last week regarding ideas for new projects.  Several items were mentioned.  All of them have merit, they just need members to work the projects.

PALMDALE ROTARY HOSTS CHILDREN’S SHOPPING SPREE

The Rotary Club of Palmdale under the leadership of Committee Chairman David Maddock conducted its 23rd Annual Children’s Shopping Spree at the Walmart Super Center on 10th Street West in Palmdale on December 2, 2017.  The Walmart Team provided the venue for twenty-four under privileged children from needy families to participate in the shopping spree.  The children came from several local elementary schools.  The students were selected by teachers from the local school districts and other youth leaders.  Each child was treated to an early morning breakfast at McDonalds inside the store.  Next came a surprise visit from Santa Claus to hear the children's wishes.  After pictures with Santa, the children were escorted by a Palmdale Rotary Club Member, a Knight High School Interact Club Member or a volunteer adult to shop throughout the store for gifts for their family members.  At the completion of shopping the packages were all wrapped with bright and festive holiday wrapping paper and bows for exchange with family members at Christmas.  In addition, each child was given and gift card which they could use at the time or wait until after Christmas to select a gift of their choice.  As always, the Rotary Club of Palmdale established two objectives for the shoppers: To learn to budget the funds provided to them and to better understand the meaning of the holiday season in which it is more rewarding to give than to receive.  Those objectives were met again with joyous success.

Tina Borzage Participates in Superbuild 2017

For the second year in a row Tina Borzage of the Rotary Club of Palmdale participated in the home building project in Tacate, Mexico.  This year’s project was designated Superbuild 2017 and took place on May 6, 2017.  The project consists of volunteer Rotarians assembling houses on pre-poured slabs.  Tina, being a veteran of the 2016 build was put in charge of the painting detail and did an excellent job.  Walls were erected, roofs completed and windows and doors were installed in one day.  For the new owners, this was probably their first home that they could lock and secure.

PALMDALE ROTARY HOSTS SUPERINTENDENT'S FIELD DIRECTOR

The Rotary Club of Palmdale hosted Donna Termeer as their guest speaker at their weekly meeting on January 25, 2017.  Ms Termeer is the Senior Field Director for recently elected Kathryn Barger (Supervisor for the 5th District in Los Angeles County).   Donna spoke to the Club about her new assignment and what lies ahead for the Antelope Valley.  Although very well known in the AV, Donna is still meeting with all the agencies in the AV to coordinate their goals and concerns to report back to Supervisor Barger.  Donna indicated that with Supervisor Barger being the only conservative on the Board of Supervisors, it may be difficult to achieve large break throughs immediately.  Being in a 4-1 minority, the victories will be small and selective in the beginning.  The Club presented their views on several subjects pertaining to the AV.  The Club asked Donna to watch for areas in which Palmdale Rotary could help the community.  The Club's focus has mostly been on youth oriented projects, but we are open to ideas where we can help out the community.

PALMDALE ROTARY HOSTS CHILDREN'S SHOPPING SPREE

The Rotary Club of Palmdale under the leadership of Committee Chairman David Maddock conducted its 22nd Annual Children’s Shopping Spree at the WalMart Super Center on 10th Street West in Palmdale on December 3, 2016.  Veronica Jordan and her Walmart Team provided the venue for twenty under privileged children from needy families to participate in the shopping spree.  The children came from the Eastside of Palmdale and were selected by Teachers from the school district.  Each child was treated to an early morning breakfast at McDonalds and then escorted by a club member or volunteer throughout the store to shop for family members.  At the completion of shopping the packages were all wrapped with festive holiday wrapping paper and bows for exchange at Christmas.  In addition, each child was given and gift card which they could use at the time or wait until after Christmas to select a gift of their choice.  As in the past, the Rotary Club established two objectives for the shoppers: To learn to budget the funds provided to them and to better understand the meaning of the holiday season in which it is more rewarding to give than to receive.  Those objectives were met again with resounding success.

PALMDALE ROTARY HOSTS VALERIE LENSING
(SPECIAL EDUCATION INSTRUCTOR)

Valerie Lensing addressed the Rotary Club of Palmdale at their weekly meeting on November 30, 2016.  Valerie is a Special Education Instructor and Therapist for Autistic Children.  Valerie briefed the Club on her work with special needs children at Manzanita School and the Palmdale Learning Center.  A few years ago the Palmdale Rotary Club sponsored a petting zoo for the children that Valerie coordinated.  Because of their special circumstances, it is easier to bring a field trip to the children than to charter a bus or van and take them on a traveling field trip.  With that thought in mind, Valerie’s current focus for the children is to bring them an entirely new field trip event.  The kids are very interested in bubbles and are fascinated by the way they float and drift with the wind.  With that thought in mind, Valerie is entertaining the idea of bringing a Master Bubble Blower to the two school campuses to entertain the children.  Valerie has arranged for two events in the Spring of 2017 and is asking the Club if they could fund some of the cost.  The cost for doing two events at two schools is approximately $800.  The Club has taken it into consideration for funding at least one of the events.

At the conclusion of her presentation, Valerie was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation from the Club for her briefing as guest speaker.

Valerie briefed the Club on her work with special needs children at Manzanita School and the Palmdale Learning Center.  Her focus for the children is to bring to them a specialist in blowing bubbles.  It is extremely difficult to take the children on field trips, so the schools focus on bringing the activity to the children in their own environment.  The cost for doing two events at two schools is approximately $800.  The Club decided to fund at least one of the two events.  Further discussion will take place later.

The next item on the agenda was finalization of the upcoming Christmas Shopping Spree at the Walmart Super Center in Palmdale.  David has finalized details with the McDonalds in the Palmdale Walmart.  Twenty children have been selected from the Antelope Elementary School area and will be available for shopping on Saturday.  They must provide their own transportation to and from the event.

PALMDALE ROTARY HOSTS SPEAKER FROM LA COUNTY ANIMAL Shelter FOUNDATION

Palmdale Rotary President, Chuck Church Presenting
Pauline East with a Certificate of Appreciation

At its regular Wednesday evening meeting, Palmdale Rotary met with Pauline East from the Los Angeles County Animal Shelter Foundation to find new ways to support activities in the Antelope Valley.  In her presentation, Pauline described the work her foundation does to support the newly constructed animal shelter in Palmdale, California and the other five shelters in Los Angeles County.  The primary concern in working with the County is to help find homes for the animals and work to get lost pets back to their owners.

Although the shelter does an excellent job with the budget it is provided by the County, the number of incoming animals far out weighs the outgoing adoptions, resulting in a budgetary shortfall.  The Foundation is focusing on education, training and information directed specifically at children regarding spay and neutering as the downstream means to reduce the influx of new animals coming into the shelter.

Palmdale Rotary will continue to remain in close contact with Pauline and the Foundation in hopes of creating a joint project that we can work on together in the near future.  Our thanks to Pauline for her informative presentation.

We are rapidly coming to the close of our 2015-2016 Rotary year.  Time has flown by so quickly that it is hard to keep track of everything.  Chuck Church attended the Board of Directors Training Seminar (BOTS) in March and briefed the club at out March 23rd meeting.  Our Spring Blowout Sale was a success at 4 Points although not quite as profitable as last year’s event.  It was a fun event and everyone had a good time.  The complete story and pictures are on the Home Page.

Remember as of January 6th, we are now meeting at Gino’s Italian Restaurant (north of Alice’s’) for our monthly Board Meetings.  As always, the meetings will take place on the first Wednesday of the month.  Otherwise we meet at Sizzler on Palmdale Blvd. for weeks 2, 3, and 4.

Six members of the club attended the Rotary 5300 District Assembly on April 9th in Apple Valley.  Everyone attended their specific training classes and special emphasis was put on attending the Rotary Grant training session.

At the club’s May 11th meeting it was decided that we would not be able to conduct our Hot Dog, Chips, & Soda fundraiser at Sam’s Club as planned.  There were just too many health and safety regulations for us to hold the event at the current time.

At the June Board Meeting, we will review activities since the May Board Meeting, review the club financials and continue with preparations for our Demotion Party on June 25th.

pALMDALE ROTARY HELPS START MUSIC PROGRAM

In a project that began last summer, the Rotary Club of Palmdale added a new chapter on March 13, 2016 with the delivery of an upright piano to the Antelope Elementary School in Littlerock.  During the summer, Palmdale Rotary took on the project of creating a music program at the elementary school.  The Club conducted a special raffle at their Oktoberfest event at Lane Ranch and raised  $1,000 which went to the purchase of musical instruments from Dana Grossi Music and Guitar Center.

The instruments were purchased and delivered to the school in January 2016.  A special ceremony took place on January 21, 2016 at the School District's Board Meeting to thank Palmdale Rotary.  Club President Sharon Freeman accepted a plaque presented by the School Board and the entire Club received hand made thank you cards from the students.  In addition, Palmdale Rotary presented a check to the school to help fund a music instructor for the first quarter of the year.

On March 13, 2016 the Club was able to deliver a piano which had been donated to the program.  The Club is actively working on plans for future contributions to the music program.

FEBRUARY MEETINGS UPDATE

It is hard to believe that the month of January 2016 has already come and gone.  It is a busy time for all of us at The Rotary Club of Palmdale as we plow through the winter and plan for upcoming spring events.  We closed out 2015 with our Annual Oktoberfest in October, a Chili Cook-Off competition, and our Annual Children’s Christmas Shopping Spree in December. Stories are currently on our website.

Remember as of January 6th, we are now meeting and Gino’s Italian Restaurant (north of Alice’s’) for our monthly Board Meetings.  As always, the meetings will take place on the first Wednesday of the month.  Otherwise we meet at Sizzler on Palmdale Blvd.

On January 21, the Palmdale Rotary Club met at the Antelope Elementary School Board Meeting to be officially recognized by the school district and the students for our donation of musical instruments to the school.  The meeting was well attended and the students, faculty, and school board directors were very thankful for our donation.

2015 Palmdale rotary children's shopping spree

Our Volunteer Helpers with Our Palmdale Rotary Banner Anxiously Await the Kids to Bring
Their Gifts to The Wrapping Table at the 2015 Children's Christmas Shopping Spree

The Rotary Club of Palmdale conducted its 18th Annual Children’s Shopping Spree at the WalMart Super Center on 10th Street West in Palmdale on December 5, 2015.  Eighteen children from needy families were selected by club members to participate in the shopping spree. The club established two objectives for the shoppers: To learn to budget the funds provided to them and to better understand the meaning of the holiday season in which it is more rewarding to give than to receive.  Those objectives were successfully met.

SEPTEMBER MEETINGS UPDATE

September is always an exciting time for us at The Rotary Club of Palmdale, because we are so busy this month with preparations for our Oktoberfest. This event was suggested by our long time Rotarian member, David Maddock six years ago. He and his wife Gracie, owned and operated a few successful restaurants in England which was very good for us and for all of you who have attended and enjoyed the food that we make every year; as all of the recipes come from their files. Thank you David and Gracie!

As of August 1st, we are now over at the Hometown Buffet (Avenue P, near 10th)  for our monthly Board Meeting. This is always on the first Wednesday of the month.  Otherwise we meet at Sizzler on Palmdale Blvd.

This month don't miss our 9/23 meeting when we will have Mr. Robert Ormsby (Bobby O) to speak to us about Music as Therapy. Bobby is a longtime musician here in the Antelope Valley and also the past director of the Performing Arts Program at Acton Rehab and currently a Music Therapist at The Cycles of Change and Artist Way Music Shop in Lancaster. Many know of Bobby O and his Band as he has performed for many years with all of the best.

RYLA PARTICIPANT SHARES HER ADVENTURE

We were so fortunate to meet with one of the students that we sponsored to attend this years RYLA -Rotary Youth Leadership Awards camp.  Her name is Jamie Calhousa a student at Palmdale High School. She shared with us her experiences at the weekend event that took place at Thousand Pines Camp in Crestline, CA.on April 17th -19th.  The excitement she gained from her experience at RYLA was infectious. All of our members were impressed with her maturity and goodness and we can tell that she is growing up to be a very special person.
Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is an intensive, two-and-a-half-day leadership training program for high school juniors in District 5300 chosen for their leadership potential. In addition to the development of leadership skills, RYLA is meant to develop understanding of Rotary among youth participants and reinforce and provide recognition for their efforts, accomplishments, skills and potential as leaders. Rotarians serve as facilitators to the students’ learning and discovery, as well as role models of Rotary ideals of the Four Way Test and Service Above Self.
We look forward to hearing from Jamie again and hope that her desire for "service above self" continues to grow.

SPRING BLOWOUT

Our first Annual Spring Blowout Fundraiser was a huge success! Thanks go out to Four Corners owners, Jennifer and Joyce and our many friends and family members who donated articles of clothing, kitchen items, books, antiques, paintings and so much more which all helped to bring in funds which we can now pass on through our projects.
It was a beautiful day filled with many kind people, music and food vendors galore.
Keep watching for our next FALL SwapMeet Blowout sometime in August.

FORGING NEW FRIENDSHIPS

If you were looking for the Rotary Club of Palmdale on April 8 at our regular meeting at Sizzler's you may have thought we had closed up shop since there was no meeting being held. That was because our members were enjoying the "Art Night" at Alpine Elementary School. Principal Geraline Cherland (pictured on the right) shared with us one of the many extra projects that the Keppel Union School District is implementing in their District.  Our club decided last year to assist Keppel Union School District with their projects and raised some funds through a raffle at our Oktoberfest 2014. We are so pleased to help them bring art, music, literature, and the arts back to our schools.

On Saturday, May 2, 2015 Sharon Freeman and I set off for a brand new adventure. We met the group of Rotarians and Corazon staff at the Haggen parking lot in Chula Vista at 6:00am. 9 vans with 10-15 passengers each and other trucks carrying the extra supplies drove down to Tecate,Mexico.  We got there around 8:00am and we started work at about 8:30 am.  By 12:30 the walls were already up and the roof was coming along nicely.  We stopped to eat a delicious homemade lunch prepared by the host family, chicken, beans, and cactus with homemade flour tortillas and orchata (rice drink) and tamarin drinks   After eating we continued working.  By 2:30 the roof was installed and they proceeded with the shingles. While that was going on all the painters were focused on painting the inside of the house and retouching the paint on the outside.  By 4:30pm the house was completed.  The size of the house is 18' X 12'.  Rosa, her three children, her mom and dad will live in this house. There were four groups of volunteers and each group was responsible for building one home. Each group had about 45 to 50 people including about 5 people from Corazon.  Four homes were built this day and three of them were sponsored by Rotary. Rosa (the recipient of the house) and her family were right along with us working really hard in building their home.

It was a very hot day and there was no shade so we had to make sure we drank a lot of water and put on lots of sunscreen.

It was very emotional at the end of the day when Rosa received the key of her own home. She was very grateful and said she felt very blessed and she thanked everybody who made it possible for her and her family to have a place they can call home. It was beautiful to be part of that experience.

Sharon and I thank all of you for the generous donation our club made toward the Corazon project. This is our international project and by far the best project we've had. We should all feel very proud.
Thank you friends and family.  Every time you buy a ticket for one of our fundraisers, you are contributing to a good cause and making a difference in someone's life.
